Robert William Paton


Born 1 November 1920 Wellington New Zealand. Parents Robert James Paton and Lilian Florence nee Cunninghame. Only child.

Died age 67 on 17 December 1987. Ashes interred in the RSA Servicemans Section Akatarawa Cemetery Wellington.

Married Iris Kathleen Maskell on 24 December 1946 at Kent Terrace Presbyterian Church Wellington.
They had a family of 3 and later divorced.

Mary Paton



Born 29 August 1912 Wanganui New Zealand. Parents Edward John Paton and Isabella Catherine nee Munro. Siblings Thomas Barrymore and Bruce.

Lived Mangaweka on family sheep farm.

Married George Gower in 1946, divorced and married Hubert (Pat) Lichtenstein in 1955. Pat died Auckland 1992.

No children. She lived a number of places mainly within New Zealand and liked to travel.

Mary died age 87 at resthome Paraparaumu 1999. Cremated and ashes scattered.

No known details on her birth or death. Parents Henry (Harry) Paton and Annie Alison nee Christie. Siblings Noeline, Henry Mckinlay, Gibson Douglas and Eris Annie.

Molly married, Edward (Ted) Harper in Auckland. Molly died in Warkworth and is buried Leigh Cemetery in Rodney District North Island. To date her exact burial location is to be found.

Eris Annie Paton


Born 9 October 1926 Wellington New Zealand. Parents Henry (Harry) Paton and Annie Alison nee Christie.
Siblings Noeline, Henry Mckinlay, Gibson Douglas and Molly.

Died age 78 on 23 November 2004 at Invercargill New Zealand. Cremated and ashes scattered.

Eris lived Wellington where she went to school later moved to Dunedin where she worked and continued with sports. She worked Southland Hospital as a histologist until retirement.

Gibson Douglas Paton


Born 20 September 1920 Wellington New Zealand. Parents Henry (Harry) Paton and Annie Alison nee Christie.

Died age 76 on 8 January 1996 at home in Martinborough NZ.

Married with a family of 4 children.

Gib served in World War 2 and occupation Civil Servant.

His son Clive Paton with sister Alison and family are owners of the Martinborough winery - Ata Rangi.

Henry Mckinlay Paton


Born 2 December 1912 Wellington New Zealand.
Died age 81 on 30 January 1993 Whangarei New Zealand and cremated Maunu Crematorium.

Siblings Noeline, Gibson Douglas, Molly & Eris Annie.

Married Jean Margaret Bremner on 1 July 1939. Jean was born 1 January 1914 Lima Peru and died 16 October 2001 Gisborne New Zealand.

Henry and Jean had a family of 4 children and they lived various towns in the North Island.

Sister Leo Noeline Paton


Born 10 February 1912 Wellington New Zealand. Parents Henry (Harry) Paton and Annie Alison nee Christie. Siblings Henry (Harry) Mckinlay, Molly, Gibson Douglas and Eris Annie.

Noeline on leaving school worked in Christchurch and during the war years became a lay assistant at St Ninians Presbyterian Church. She decided to enter full-time work of the church in 1947 and entered the Deaconess College in Dunedin.

Appointed Deaconess in Chalmers 1949. Resigned from Chalmers Presbyterian Church Timaru in 1955 and entered Teachers College in Christchurch.

For several years Sister Leo Noeline Paton was on staff of the Cerebral Palsy School in Christchurch and in 1962 became the Head of the Dunedin Cerebral Palsy School.

Later on in life, retired to the Otago Peninsula. Noeline died 1st February 1985 age 74 at Waikari Hospital Dunedin. She was cremated at Andersons Bay Cemetery.

Elsie Paton


Born 9 December 1895 Dunedin New Zealand.
Died 22 July 1939 Dunedin.
Parents Henry Paton and Mary nee Mckinlay.
Siblings Henry (Harry), Edward John, Robert James, Mary (Minnie) and Grace Gibson.

Elsie never married and lived with parents in Dunedin. She was a music teacher and concert pianist.

Her mother and aunt Janet Mckinlay nursed Elsie at home for some time but later died Dunedin Hospital age 44 and is buried with parents.

Grace Gibson Paton


Born 12 February 1889 Dunedin New Zealand. Parents Henry Paton and Mary nee Mckinlay, siblings Henry (Harry), Edward John, Robert James, Mary (Minnie), Elsie.

Married Knox Church Dunedin at the age of 31 to Albert (Bert) Gardner youngest son of Margaret nee Mckinlay and George Gleigg Gardner.

They had 4 children - Margaret Mary died age 9.

Prior to the War Grace lived Wellington and worked as a telephonist.
Later when married the family lived on the farm at Waikari North Canterbury.
Her husband Bert occupation farmer died 1939 at Sumner Christchurch.

Grace died 1963 at Sumner Christchurch and is buried along with husband in the Gardner family plot at Bromley Cemetery.

Mary (Minnie) Paton


Born 27 October 1884 Dunedin New Zealand. Parents Henry Paton and Mary nee Mckinlay, siblings Henry (Harry), Edward John, Robert James, Grace Gibson and Elsie.

Minnie married Edwin Moodie Grant and they had 2 sons and a daughter.
Family lived Wanganui where Minnie was a music teacher. She was an opera singer and also played the violin and piano.

Her husband Edwin, retired died Wanganui 1966.
Minnie died 16 October 1967 and is buried Wanganui.

Son Donald (Don) Edwin Grant played rugby for Waikato 1950 - 1956. 71 games, 12 points and 4 trys.
Don passed away in 1999.

Robert James Paton


Born 18 September 1886 at Waverley Dunedin New Zealand. Father Henry Paton age 35 yrs and mother Mary nee Mckinlay age 30 yrs. Siblings Henry (Harry), Edward John, Mary (Minnie), Grace Gibson and Elsie.

Married Lilian Florence Cunninghame in Dunedin 5th May 1920. Robert a Bachelor and Clerk and Lilian a Spinster born Melbourne Australia. Only child a son Robert William born Wellington 1920.

Robert died age 78 yrs at Wellington Hospital on 30 November 1964. He was cremated and his ashes interred at Karori Cemetery along with Lilian in 1966.

Was selected for the NZ team to tour United State and Canada in 1913 but broke his shoulder before the team left and didn't tour.

Became a prominent referee when retired from playing and was also a Wellington Cricket Association umpire for many years.

Henry (Harry) Paton


Born 12 February 1881 Dunedin New Zealand. Died 21 January 1964 age 82.
Parents Henry Paton and Mary nee Mckinlay siblings Edward John, Mary (Minnie), Robert James, Grace Gibson and Elsie.

Married Jean nee Weir in 1910 at Knox Church Dunedin. Jean Paton died 26 September 1911 age 28 and buried Andersons Bay Cemetery Dunedin.

Henry married Annie Alison Christie known as Alice in 1912. Alice died 17th October 1965 age 83.
Henry & Alice both cremated Andersons Bay Cemetery and ashes scattered.

Orbituary Notice
Mr H Paton - One of the oldest All Blacks and a famous Otago forward of his time, Mr H (Harry) Paton, died in Dunedin at the age of 83.
Mr Paton represented Otago on 33 occasions from 1906 to 1911. He played for the South Island from 1906-1910 and toured Australia with the New Zealand teams in 1907 and 1910. Mr Paton moved to Wellington in 1912 and there played for the Oriental Club.

Ship 'Canterbury'


Sailed from Greenock (Glasgow) bound for New Zealand on her maiden voyage. Departed Greenock 4th June 1874 arrived Lyttelton NZ 1st September 1874 taking 87 days enroute via Cape Horn.

'Canterbury' a beautiful clipper ship of 1242 tons built for Patrick Henderson & Co. by Robert Duncan sailed the seas for many years during the 70's and 80's bringing thousands of immigrants to New Zealand. She was one of the fastest sailors and most comfortable ship afloat and made some remarkable runs both out and back.

On board with Henry Paton were 486 government immigrants and Captain Strachan the master of the vessel.

Father John Paton a carpenter and Jane Gibson his mother.

From a ploughman in Scotland to an engineer in New Zealand.
Henry was employed with the New Zealand Railways progressing from Engineman to Engine Driver until his retirement after 35 years of employment.

In 1898 as Engine-man Sub-Class 5 Grade 2 his salary was 11 S with length of service 19 years and 7 months. In 1910 after 31 years 7 months employment his salary was 12s 6d. position Engine Driver Sub-Class 8 Grade 1.

Henry was an engineer & bachelor residing Dunedin New Zealand prior to marriage 23 February 1880 to Mary McKinlay spinster of Ferry Road Christchurch.

Mary McKinlay born 25 November 1855 Bothwell Lanark Scotland. Mother Mary McConnell (Cook) - third wife of James McKinlay (Colliery Worker).

They had 6 children - Henry (Harry) born 12 February 1881, Edward John born 24 November 1882, Mary (Minnie) born 27 October 1884, Robert James born 18 September 1886, Grace Gibson born 12 February 1889 and Elsie born 1895.

Henry died 18th March 1920 age 69 at home 59 Maitland Street Dunedin of cardiac failure after a 2 year illness. Mary was a widow at 64 with 6 surviving adult children.
